    Croatian abstract

    English abstract

The aim od this study was to investigate the association of the bone mineral density in children with genetic polymorphisms. The sample consisted of 168 chidlren (85 girls and 83 boys). Four polymorphisms were analysed – aromatase, IGF-1, estrogen receptor and androgen receptor. Furthermore, for each examinee a survey was used to estimate dietary habits and other possible behavioural patterns associated with bone mieral density. The results indicated significant association of CYP19 aromtase with bone mineral density, as well as significant association of BMD with calcium intake and physical activity. This confirms the complex nature of the bone mineral density determination and suggests the potential targets for intervention program which would be aimed at reducing the risks of developing osteoporosis and other adverse outcomes related to reduction of bone mineral density.
