Abstract

Combined acellular pertussis vaccines can cause large local reactions at injection site. In contrast to whole cell pertussis vaccines, the frequency of large local reactions increases with the number of administered doses of acellular pertussis vaccines. These reactions which occur more often following booster doses, can involve swelling of the entire limb. The effect of analgesics/antipyretics, antihistamines and corticosteroids on the duration of large local reactions at injection site following administration of vaccines has not been systematically studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of medication on the duration of large local reactions at injection site following administration of combination vaccines containing the acellular pertussis component. In order to evaluate the effect of medical treatment on duration of large local reactions, I performed a retrospective analysis of reported adverse events, using reported data and additional information collected from vaccination providers. According to the results of this study, administration of analgesic/antipyretic drugs, corticosteroids and/or antihistamines does not influence the duration of extensive local reactions following administration of acellular pertussis containing vaccines.
